I love the pythons, with a couple of exceptions their movies are great.Since these dudes are all history professors when they take a stab at acostume drama they usually do a good job of getting it right. The moviecaptures the attitudes and ambiance of the period very well, thecostuming was what I'd call excellent.I really don't think many could have done a better job of casting theparts in this movie. The blind guy with the super hearing was a riot aswas yellowbeard himself, right down to the slow matches in his beard--avery period touch since everyone was mostly still running around withswords and matchlock blackpowder weapons. The Chong brothers were alsowell cast in their parts. This movie was pure python, most of the jokeswill sail over the heads of the younger crowd but the adults will belaughing themselves silly in many parts of the movie. I'm reallydisappointed that they haven't got this out in DVD yet, when it doescome out it will go in my collection next to the Holy Grail and Ericthe Viking (which also isn't released in region 1 yet).
This review is from: Yellowbeard (DVD) This is one of my all-time favorite movies. So much so that I bought a VHS copy on eBay and did a capture to put it on DVD for myself and my friends..didn't do a half bad job, but it was just the movie, nothing else. Well, this DVD is just about the same, only much better quality. There are no fancy-schmancy special features, just the movie. It is the most ambitious comedy cast ever combined, it has the dry British humor of Monty Python, along with the Mel Brooks feel of American farce. Cheech and Chong are hilarious, Madeline Kahn is her usual best, and Graham Chapman does an excellent pirate. This movie is a little thin on plot, so if you don't like that kind of humor, you're out of luck. Buy a nice Adam Sandler flick instead.
I have watched this film many times as a child and it is a favourite ofmine. Rarely do we see Pirate romps that are the basis of comedies in thepast decade, actually rarely do we 'Pirate' films in general thesedays. If you're a fan of the Monty Python films then I recommend you see thisfilm, it has schlock 80s British humour, but in general this is a fun film, and its even got enough action to keep you entertained for an hour and abit! Also where else would you see so many great actors and classiccomedians all in the one film- Graham Chapman, Marty Feldman, James Mason,Madeline Kahn, Peter Cook, Michael Hordern, Peter Boyle, John Cleese, SpikeMilligan and Cheech and Chong! Yellowbeard is a classic comic 'Pirate' flickthat probably represents a genre of comedy that was for its time.Nevertheless this is worth a look! ***1/2 out of *****!
The comedic absurdity of Monty Python, Cheech & Chong, and Mel Brooks all in one? Winner.
Saw this when I was a kid, and loved it. Was a bit afraid it might have lost its shine during the 20-odd years that have passed, but I still thinnk it a great comedy. Hillarious scenes when the guards start "faking" their deaths. :-)
This review is from: Yellowbeard (DVD) Are you in the mood for a pirate with a little more experience under his swordbelt, a man who takes an old-fashioned sort of pride in raping and robbing and who, if the circumstances are right, will force men to eat their own lips? Then you need to set sail with Yellowbeard.Yellowbeard is Graham Chapman's fierce and mighty captain in this classic seafaring movie set in the golden age of piracy. Chapman -- best known for his work with Monty Python's Flying Circus, particularly as Brian in "Life of Brian" and Arthur in "The Holy Grail" -- chews scenery with such gusto you expect him to bite through ship's planks and maybe a palm tree or two. He is hail and hearty, greedy to a fault and ruthless in his pursuit of enough Spanish gold to make him the richest man in the world. The story is simple but fun, and the cast is pure comedic delight, including Tommy Chong, Cheech Marin, Madeline Kahn, Peter Cook, Michael Hordern, Eric Idle, Peter Boyle, John Cleese and Marty Feldman. Chapman in particular roars through the movie with bloodthirsty enthusiasm; the man was a true comic genius. This movie is mostly about silliness and meaningless fun, with only a thin thread of a plot holding it together. Critics who dismiss it as nonsense miss the point. It's rough and unpolished, and even funnier for it. "Yellowbeard" is a laugh riot, and it deserves to be pulled from the shelf and enjoyed at least once each year.by Tom Knapp, Rambles.NET editor
Yellowbeard is an under-rated pirate comedy from the Monty Python team. The story goes like this: The dread pirate Yellowbeard is in prison for his dastardly crimes committed throughout the seven seas. The British government suspects he has an enormous stash of treasure, but don't know where he has hidden it. As he is coming to the end of his prison term, they decide to increase his sentence, hoping he will break out of prison and lead them straight to the treasure.Mayhem ensues as Yellowbeard goes to retrieve his treasure, pursued by an ever-growing crowd of treasure hunters who will stop at nothing to steal from Yellowbeard what he rightfully stole off someone else. This is a well told comedy with humour that is delivered with poise, timing, and is laugh-out-loud funny.
Peter Boyle's death yesterday brings to mind all his movies, includingthe rather silly "Yellowbeard". The movie features Graham Chapman asthe title character, an 18th-century pirate who gets released from jailto help the British government find his treasure. That's when he findsout that he has a son who has little desire to be a pirate. From there, much of the movie consists of sword fights, one-liners, and Cheech &Chong. Overall, I thought that it was a little bit lamer than it couldhave been, but I agree with a previous reviewer that it's just neat tosee all these people together in a movie. The flick is little more thana way to pass time, but there's a few laughs along the way. Alsostarring John Cleese, Eric Idle, Marty Feldman (in his final role; themovie is dedicated to him), Peter Cook, Kenneth Mars, Spike Milligan, and David Bowie in a cameo. And remember: he has a big yellow beard.
Sooooo funny. With my new internet at work, excited to investigate to see if ANYONE has heard of this movie,(never see it in the video stores). You don't know how excited I was to see it come up. But then, you say it isn't available????!!!! Please, please, make it available so I can watch it with my now adult son and daughter and laugh outselves stupid - - again
My wife and I have been looking for this movie on DVD for years, and we are tickled that we finally found it. It is an ensemble cast of comedy characters from the 1970's; the Monty Python crew (shy of Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin), Cheech and Chong, and most of the cast of Young Frankenstein; Marty Feldman, Peter Boyle, Kenneth Mars, and Madeline Kahn ... and then there's Peter Cook, James Mason, and more.A very under rated film -- although it is very silly and slapstick.
I haven't seen it this movie in years and I still find myself quoting it!This movie is so clever, so sidesplitting, so hilarious. I gotta find itonvideo somewhere! My favorite line (don't worry, I won't finish it)... "Ifyou don't tell me where it is...."
I remember seeing this one in the cinema, and (thankfully, otherwise I'd be forking over bucks deluxe for a used copy) recorded it once upon a time when it was on HBO. This is slapstick british comedy at it's high-falutin'-est. Graham Chapman is wonderful in his over the top performance as the lead, with his "Arghh"s down to perfection, and John Cleese as Blind Pew deadpans some fantastic one-liners. This is vintage Python before they began to lose a bit of their edginess. Cheech and Chong do a good job as Mayan/Aztec "luminaries", and Madeline Kahn is (as always) quite the tart. Watch this one a couple of times, and you'll find yourself quoting some of the more memorable lines in your daily life, and you'll be surprised how many folks will know where you got it from ("I 'ave acute 'earing". "I'm not interested in your jewelry!"). Please guys, let's get this one reissued on DVD with some bonus material!
This review is from: Yellowbeard (DVD) I was so happy to be able to purchase this dvd, it was getting risky to play the old tape. Yellowbeard is my favorite movie of all time, of course, I'm a huge fan of British comedy. If you don't enjoy Yellowbeard, you don't have a sense of humor! For those of you reading this who've never seen the movie, buy it, you won't be disappointed!
I've always loved this movie, especially the contributions of the Monty Python, James Mason, Marty Feldman and Madeline Kahn.Cheech & Chong segments don't seem to fit, but the movie is truly a cult classic in my book, and I love watching it over & over.I'm so glad it's finally available in DVD.
I concur with all but one of the reviewers; this is one of the best comedies I have ever seen. It's Monty Python meets Mel Brooks..........I quote it often, and I watch my very worn copy when I need a good therapeutic laugh.
i won't add plot descriptions, or my high opinions of most of the cast, others have done that well...(except that i would watch madeline kahn sing, act, eat cereal- or read the nutritional information from the box) this is truly a bare bones dvd with zero fun in the menu and has zero extras... i would have at least made the menus more than generic, grey nothings... even the free movie maker software out there does more than this dvd offers.i LOVE this movie, and i needed it to complete my everything python collection, in my world, this was the last piece of the puzzle- but it's not just as a completionist's obsession.expert comedic timing on the part of everyone involved makes this ensemble flick more than its parts. i did not pay the asking price approaching $100 for a VHS a few years ago because i at least had a poor bootleg, and as all things VHS i knew even a so-called 'new' copy would deteriorate as often as i would watch it.so, i'm glad they got the licensing squabbles (or were they tiffs?) out of the way and made this dvd, so i can rest knowing i'm not a last keeper of the flame.
The problem here is trying to mix the broad British farce of Monty Python(viz Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, John Cleese), the parody wit of theoh-so-Jewish Mel Brooks' gang (Peter Boyle, Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman)and the usually drug-laden humor of Cheech & Chong -- who, this time around, are after dubloons instead of reefer -- and assuming that they will allboost the comedy into the stratosphere.Wrong! Three different ensembles, three different styles. The script comesfrom ONE of the Pythons, Chapman, with none of the ensemble writing thatfueled his troupe. And the Brooks and C&C folks apparently didn't addanything beyond reading lines. We've laughed at them all in their smaller-group efforts. But here they workagainst each other. This movie shows comedians are like aspirin: One or twowill cure a headache. A handful will only make it worse!
I found this movie extremely funny, no, it was hilarious. I wouldstrongly recommend this movie to anyone who wanted a really good laughit's British humour at it's very best. One burning question remains iswhen can we expect to see this classic on DVD? I for one would bequeueing up to buy it. The monty python team is a team of geniuses. Theplot lines are nothing short of brilliant. The satirical shot of thereligious side of the story would certainly of raised a few eyebrowsbut isn't irreverence one of the corner stones of python stories, youonly have to watch "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" to come to thatconclusion. All in all it takes class, tradition, the stiff upper lipand all that was britania and turns it on it's head.
Warped humor from the Python group and many others, including Cheech &Chong, Mary Feldman, Madeline Kahn, Peter Boyle, etc. Yellowbeard'ssingle-minded approach to life is the anchor for this film, witheverythingelse swirling around it. There are a few 'lame' scenes that must beendured, but they're easily overlooked. My VHS version is not the bestquality, but it has been watched many times. I'm hoping for a DVD versionone day soon.
I somehow missed this movie in its first release, but having seen itrecently on cable I realized I didn't miss much. Looking at the castand crew, you'd expect one of the greatest comedy films ever made.Three Pythons, Peter Cook, Cheech & Chong, and several Mel Brooksalumni (Mars, Boyle, Kahn, Feldman, and composer Morris). But it nevergets off the ground. It's as though Chapman couldn't figure out if hewanted to make a cute adventure movie or a zany comedy, so it ends upnot functioning well as either. I kept waiting for a genuinely funnysequence, but in vain. Peter Cook is wasted in a fairly straight role(as is Eric Idle), and most of the other cast members wander aimlesslythrough the thin plot. Chapman could probably have written a very funny5-minute pirate sketch, but was out of his depth in a 90-minutefeature. John Morris did produce a good soundtrack, however, and DavidBowie makes a nice walk-on appearance.
