Plot Summary:
What can you write about a movie best described as indescribable? Topicture what you will see, imagine a Ralph Bakshi film (of the animatedLord of the Rings, Wizards, and Fritz the Cat fame)on speed. A big fanof animated film with over 20 years of animation experience, I rankmovies like The Iron Giant, Akira, and The Plague Dogs as examples ofstellar movie making. The animation style WILL be unlike anything youhave experienced before, anime or otherwise, guaranteed. Characterdesigns jump from the imagination of people that appear to be in themidst of a good shroom trip. But make no mistake, it is as fluid, colorful, stylized and adrenaline inducing as any animated movie outthere. Remember that the studio behind this flick is the same as thoseresponsible for the anime scene in Kill Bill Vol. 1, Ghost in the Shelland Jin-Roh (another stellar example of quality cinema, animated ornot)... Production I.G.

Bright pastel colors! "Hip!" "Urbane!" Looks like Jet Set Radio! Cheap, digital, flash-looking animation! Watered down punk ethos via pouty, fey "indie" aesthetic! Superficially "insane", like watching 100 viralvideos at once! Whatever. I'm just too old. But y'know, out with theold and in with the new and stuff. But, hey, you don't mind if the"new" is just an ironic/absurd/twee repackaging of the old, right? Ohgeneration Y. Dead Leaves does have much of theblink-and-you'll-miss-it sugar rush kineticism of FLCL, but it lacksthe warmth and soul in both art design and characters. It's likewatching an hour long Gorrilaz music video or something--who CARES howmuch giant robot action and contrived "mindscrewiness" there is,there's no content or weight to any of it. Basically, when you reach my age (167), you begin to realize something:the harder you try to make something "CURRENT" and "NOW", the moreobviously lame and dated it will be later.
When I first heard of this anime, I was a bit apprehensive about it.But the premise intrigued me. That and the fact that the directorworked on "FLCL." The animation sort of reminds me of the style used in"INVADER ZIM" and "WORLD RECORD" from the ANIMATRIX. Rregardless, I amglad I decided to pick this up. The premise is: Pandy and Retro (a guywith a TV for a head) wake up naked with no memory. They proceed tothen get some clothes, steal a car and lead the police on a wild,gun-blazing, high-speed chase which ends in their arrests. They arethen sent to DEAD LEAVES, a prison on the moon. After engineering anescape, they have to contend with the twisted Triple 6, his hulkishbrother Triple 7 and the enigmatic Warden. This anime is all over theplace! There's guns, explosions, BIGGER guns, sex, penis drills (youhave to watch to see)! If you like your anime no-hold's barred and justlight years above regular orbit check this out!

Production I.G.The animation is only the first layer of this 100% original film. Whenboth the producer and director claim at the movie's premier that it wastheir full intention to create a film for the audience to rave alongwith as they watched it, you know you are in for something unique. Theywent so far as to remove seating for the viewing audience. The music isa stunning combination of hard, fast, slick techno rhythms and poundingrock riffs. I have been searching for a soundtrack release, as this oneranks up there with the greatest Kanno compositions. There is a shortscene that acts as a prelude to a level of violence rarely seen infilm. The prisoners are being blocked by armed prison guards. As aprisoner walks up to the guards demanding passage, the music, which tothis point has been blistering, quiets down to a single snare drum andcymbal rhythm, the proverbial calm before the storm. The combination ofmusic, camera angle, and style creates one of the greatest actionbuilds seen in a long time. I replayed this 30 second scene repeatedly, and it only became cooler.Be warned. This is an incredibly violent movie. There are more peoplekilled, guns fired, things blown up, and sex than any movie that I canthink of in... well pretty much ever. This is not a film for the kidsor the squeamish. The story line is simple and not really required. Ata number of points, the two main characters try to figure out who theyare. These scenes show that the director was not wholly concerned withaspects of character development, choosing instead to make up acompletely nonsensical background explained in a 15 second monologue. It becomes laugh out loud funny as you realize the director has heldyour attention trying to figure who these characters are withmeandering rambles that ultimately don't lead to anything. Brilliant. This is a 45 minute tech demo for what can be created with animationand an insanely stylized vision, not the next Lawrence of Arabia.I don't know what else to say. This review is not written from anadolescent's point of view (not that there is anything wrong with theirviews). This is simply a most unique vision committed to celluloid. Ifyou are a fan of anime, this flick is a no brainer, TRUST ME!! If youare simply a fan of all things quality and innovative, you owe yourselfthis one. Like it, love it, or hate it, you will walk away with a brandnew experience.Note: If you have access to a home theater set-up and big screen TV, doyour best to experience this film in that environment. It is a visual, and sonic tour-de-force. As well, the voices in the dubbed versioncreate an entirely different tone for the film, and MOST DEFINITELY NOTin a good way. Stick to the original Japanese audio (and really, if youare a purist of anime, foreign film, or art for that matter, then youshould already know that dubs are abominations, end of debate).Peace Everyone
As the above reviews imply this flick is utter insanity, but brilliantinsanity! Thoughtful, creative and brutally raw Dead Leaves isessentially a Japanese acid trip in prison. Full pointless filthycreations that can quite literally only work and defecate! The creatorsare not surprisingly complete lunatics (But just the sort of guys youwould love to have a drink with). The directors commentary ishilarious, opening with the pair discussing how long they have been inthe bar drinking before even mentioning the film itself.Involving the producers of Ghost in the Shell, three drunken Japaneselegends claimed to have blown nearly the entire budget in the first tenminutes of the picture. A Dramatic but classic car chase between ourprotagonists' (one with a TV on his head, the other a strange clownlooking woman.) Who set out on a ten-minute trail of destructionthrough an urban futuristic city, until their exploits dump them intothe highest security prison on the moon. The budget constrictions become so obvious throughout the rest of thepicture but rather than holding back, these constraints actually add tofilms aesthetic affect. It's a comedy more than anything and thesefinancial problems heighten the comedic factor to a great extent. Alsothe animation is inventive and affective, a simplistic style ofanimation that would in fact require enormous artistic talent on thepart of the animators. Very typical of the best new styles of animationwhereby extreme complexity creates a beautifully simplistic image.(Cartoon Networks Samurai Jack being a great example of such ananimative style.) Dead Leaves is great fun, a new experience and notfor faint-hearted or over conservative. As I say it's raw, brutal andblunt; the writers have held back in no respects whatsoever, puttingthe true dark extremities of the human consciousness into a comicscript. So for fans of the genre or newbie's who want to see somethingcrazy, off world and unimaginable  Dead Leaves is well worth a watch. You may feel slightly offended but will certainly not miss 55 minutesof your life! Enjoy.
I really don't understand how anyone can like this movie. I thought itwas absolutely disgusting. This animation is just so sick and wrong on so many levels. There'spractically no story or character building behind any of itscharacters, all the characters look like freaky mutant versions ofSponge Bob characters. There's even a penis character that squirtsliquids (don't ask). There's excessive use of violence and torture thatseemed to be used for cheap shock value. Or perhaps violence forviolence's sake is what they had in mind? The protagonists are unlikable as they come, as the story begins withthem killing innocent people on the street to stealing their stuff. Noother motivations beyond that other than imply its "fun".The music consists of repetitive techno beats and that's it.The animation looks like its drawn by angry 3rd graders or mentalpatients. There's massive frame skips that make it jerk around worstthan the later Evangelion episodes. In my mind watching this film is like the anime version of been raped, mentally raped. Been so violated that it makes you sick. And the peoplewho liked this film are like the weird people in prison who gets rapedthen turns around and says they enjoyed the experience.I just don't get it.
This review is from: Dead Leaves (Amazon Instant Video) You will like this if you like FLCL/Redline.Nonstop craziness and action.A little on the rated R side so wouldn't recommend letting under 17 crowd watch it.
Normally I ask for a plot in my movies, but when this was movie wasfinished I realize that you can still have a great movie withpractically no plot. This movie gets this score for its amazinganimation style, its no bars held style of action, its tongue in cheekhumor, and style dripping out of every poor. Some of the humor was abit low (I'm look at you Drill!) and the story was really confusing, but overall I thought that this movie was one of the most memorablepieces of work I have ever seen. If you come into this movie expectinga deep tapestry, you will be shocked and appalled, but if you likedKill Bill and movies that are as fast as an fighter jet, rent or buythis movie now!
I dont remember much of it, nut what i do remember is that it was insane. It is a freakin ride. Hot Dam. See this one and you will be amazed.
I'm not an anime fan. I started to go in to why, but deleted it anddecided to write about why I like Dead Leaves. How I am going to dothat is by saying that even though I am not a fan of the genre, FLCL isone of my all time favorite viewing experiences. I fell in love with itthe moment I saw it, and have owned various DVD releases of it andwatched them many times, each viewing finding something new. Untiltonight, I was disconsolate that no other anime would ever make me situp and take notice. Now, Dead Leaves is not quite to FLCL's level, IMO; however, they arekindred spirits. First of all, it's a short, just over 3/4 of an hour,so it didn't have the time to develop its characters or plot as well, neither does it have the bittersweet, weird love story of FLCL, nor thecoming of age subtext rife with adolescent realizations that makes FLCLso special, but then again, it doesn't want or need any of these. Whatit does have are tons of LOL, WTF and "AWESOME!" moments, packed in sotightly, this is something that will need to be watched again andagain. It also shares FLCL's humor, twisted sensibility and style.Another comment indicates that the director of Dead Leaves also workedon FLCL, but I can't find confirmation of that here on IMDb; however, Iwould not be surprised in the slightest that that was the case. This short has given me hope that Japan hasn't only made one anime thatI can appreciate. It is confirmed that it has now made at least two.
I only saw the last half, but it blew me away! The animation was especially incredible! You might describe it as a cross between anime and LA graffiti. Missing quite a bit, I wasn't quite caught up with the characters or the story, but they were interesting enough to make me want to know more. Hopefully, I'll get around to seeing the first and giving a full review.
This was different from anything I've ever seen. It was absolutely amazing. This is the craziest, fastest paced, over the top and unique piece of media ever created. This animation isn't like anime or anything else out there. If you don't like this film, you must be really uptight, or have poop in your noggin.
I saw this one night on a whim. I had no idea what this was going tobe. On animidnight I catch the occasional anime and this was somethingdifferent. This is Dead Leaves. This totally blew away my expectations!! We start with our two heroeswho for some reason are sitting alone naked and have amnesia. After asmall introduction to our heroes, the mayhem begins. The animationalone is the first thing I noticed and it's so stunningly original andfun to look at and fits the story well. The characters our heroes meetalong the way are far too funny and silly. This is also packed withsome memorable one liners as well. The action is aggressive, funny, original(there's that word again), and extremely violent. Our heroesare very likable(especially Retro), and totally own the screen. Alsowatch for lots of crude and vulgar humor and language. This is not forkids at all. One of the many characters is Chinco Doll, a mutant with adrill. Once we meet him, let the crude begin. I'll just leave it atthat. The voice acting is fantastic, the story is pretty good too. After all of this, why give this a nine and not a ten? Because this isonly 45 minutes long. After this ended, I wanted more. 45 minutes doesthis no justice. The Last Word: Fantastic. This is an original work of art. I can watchthis over and over and this will not get old. From the humor to theaction, Dead Leaves delivers all. Only drawback, too short. Dead Leaveswill leave you wanting more.
